After the Sandy Hook disaster in Newtown, Connecticut, the White House commissioned the Stop the Bleed™ program in an effort to increase survivability from mass casualty events. A joint committee of emergency responders, law enforcement personnel, and physicians developed a national policy on increasing survivability following mass casualty events called the Hartford Consensus. The consensus found that victims of trauma are susceptible to critical blood loss before first responders can reach the scene, and that immediate bystander care is critical in preventing survivable death, illustrated by the following statistics:
- Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for people younger than 46
- 35% of prehospital deaths are due to blood loss
- 80% of victims in a mass casualty event are transported to the hospital by members of the public
- Death due to traumatic bleeding can occur in less than 5 minutes
- The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states that emergency response should begin within 5 minutes
- National EMS response times often exceed the NFPA target times
- Of the 147,000 trauma deaths in 2014, 30,000 victims might have survived with appropriate care, primarily control of bleeding
Since its first shipment of life-saving products to the US military in November 2014, Panakeia and its partner, RevMedx, has been at the forefront of saving military lives due to blood loss with their line of hemorrhage control solutions. XSTAT®, XGAUZE®, AIRWRAP® PARABELT®, and the SHARKBITE™ Kit all provide unique, potentially life-saving capabilities to help medics and civilian first responders save lives. XSTAT uses a syringe-like applicator to apply small compressed sponges into deep penetrating wounds. Inside the wound, the sponges absorb blood and rapidly expand to stop bleeding in areas where a tourniquet would not be as effective, such as wounds in the hip or shoulder. An x-ray-detectable marker embedded in each sponge ensures retrieval during definitive surgery. The spring-like, pliable sponges conform to the wound cavity and exert multidirectional pressure to address all bleeding points. There are two versions of XSTAT:
- The XSTAT-30® has a 30mm-diameter syringe filled with 92 sponges for larger wounds
- The New XSTAT-12® with a 12mm tip that allows for application into narrower and deeper wounds resulting from a variety of penetrating trauma injuries
Panakeia is focused on ensuring all customers are adequately knowledgeable regarding the proper use of the life-saving product and offers the XSTAT® Training System and Mannequin. These tools offer refillable applicators and a specifically designed mannequin for important hands-on training. According to Pamela Jackson, Panakeia’s COO & cofounder, “These unique and innovative medical device solutions are already proving to save both civilian and military lives.
